What is Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Rehabilitation?
The traumatic nature of a Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) can result in a wide array of physical injuries and cognitive deficits. The rehabilitation of these clients begins with an in depth evaluation by our multidisciplinary team to identify all the components of the injury. This team includes Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, Chiropractors, Massage Therapists and Kinesiologists. The client’s treatment plan is designed to address all the issues identified in the assessment, and will take into account activities of daily living (ADL’s), workplace demands, and cognitive restrictions, so it can be tailored to the individual needs of the client.

What to expect from treatment?
Back on Track Physiotherapy’s multidisciplinary approach to MVA rehab starts with a comprehensive assessment by the Physiotherapist or Chiropractor to identify all the issues related to the MVA and formulate a treatment plan to address them all. The Physiotherapist or Chiropractor will then make recommendations for treatment depending on the symptoms of the client. These recommendations can include:
- Active/Functional exercises to help restore mobility and function
- Modalities for pain control and healing promotion (Ultrasound, Electrical Stim, Laser Therapy, moist heat, and ice)
- Registered Massage Therapy to promote muscle healing, relaxation and pain control
- Occupational Therapy (OT) to address any barriers to recovery in the home or work environment. OT’s also perform cognitive assessments to determine if cognitive deficits are present after head trauma/concussions.
- Concussion Management to address the unique symptoms related head trauma after an MVA. These can include: dizziness, nausea, light sensitivity, sound sensitivity, cognitive deficits and neck pain.
- Registered Kinesiology sessions to address limitations in strength, flexibility and overall conditioning. They can also address limitations with return to work, return to sport, and return to activities of daily living (ADL’s)
- Manual Therapy by the physiotherapist and/or chiropractor to restore proper joint mobility in the spine and other joints that are often effected by a MVA.
- Acupuncture/Dry Needling is often used to treat pain and muscle trigger points that are common after the trauma of a MVA.
- Bracing may be recommended depending on the extent of the injuries. The Physiotherapist and Chiropractor can recommend and fit for bracing on site, and include them in the overall treatment plan.
Communication with the insurance adjuster, attending physician, and other involved healthcare professionals is essential. The client is followed as they move back into normal activities and return to work. Support during this phase of their rehabilitation is often crucial to their long-term success.
Back on Track Physiotherapy will coordinate payment for services related to the MVA directly with the insurance provider to limit any out of pocket expenses to the client. This allows the client to concentrate on their recovery and return to normal function.
