Functional dry needling is a mechanical-device assisted (acupuncture needle) manual therapy technique. Dry needling is used primarily to decrease muscle tension and release trigger points (TP). The technique requires the insertion of a needle briefly in to a tight muscle/ TP often eliciting a twitch response. Dry needling focuses on improving movement by releasing tension in the structures restricting proper movement. This allows for pain reduction as proper movement patterns are re-established. Dry needling is an effective treatment for many musculoskeletal conditions and requires specialized training by the physiotherapist.
